Overview
Community transport is essential for a range of people to be connected to their communities. This includes people without access to public transport, those socially isolated, or dealing with mental health challenges, people with disability and the elderly. The not-for-profit community transport provider, TransitCare, offers door-to-door services, helping people connect to their community, whether it’s attending medical appointments, going shopping or to the library, gym, hairdresser, or social and recreational outings.
“All our staff have been through cultural awareness training to make them conscious of cultural differences and requirements of our First Nations customers. In Cairns, we have several Indigenous staff working with us and that has really helped break down cultural barriers.”

The Challenge
Siloed community transport services in regional Australian lead to inefficiencies, duplication, and high costs. Despite shared funding, 33 services across 13 brands often transport just 1–2 clients to the same area. With growing demand and limited resources, TransitCare needs help improving coordination, reducing costs, and maintaining equitable, sustainable service delivery.

The Solution
The proposed Mobility Centre is a coordinated transport solution tailored to individual needs within target groups. It offers a single access point for transport-disadvantaged users, integrating existing infrastructure through a “one call–one click” system. Services are scheduled, shared, and personalised, aligned with user needs and existing fixed routes. The system also supports first/last mile options and uses GIS-based scheduling software to optimise shared trips.
